A suit for the evening reception. A bandhgala for a sangeet, an engagement or any family function dressed in Indian clothes. The suit reads cosmopolitan and lets you stand clearly against a bride in heavy traditional wear. The bandhgala is closed-collar and Indian in silhouette, more formal than a jacket and lighter than a sherwani, and belongs in a room full of silks.
Key points
- If you are picking one garment, a well-cut suit in deep navy or forest green is the safer choice for a South Indian evening reception.
- The bandhgala has a role of its own. Closed Nehru collar, no lapel, worn with a shirt and no tie. It sits between a jacket and a sherwani and photographs beautifully.
- Occasion before fabric before fit. Vijay Kapoor's rule when a groom walks in: pick the function first, then the cloth, then the shaping.
- Chennai heat is a cloth question. A half-lined jacket in Super 120s or 130s wool for the suit, a slubby linen for the bandhgala, and the heat stops dictating the wardrobe.
- Prices at Derby Tailor Studio, before GST, as of October 2026: made-to-measure suits from ₹18,000, a linen bandhgala from around ₹27,000, the finest wool suits running to about ₹80,000.
One wedding has three to five functions, and no single garment is right for all.
What is a bandhgala, exactly?
A single-breasted jacket with a stand-up Nehru collar and no lapel, worn over a shirt without a tie, with matching or contrast trousers and usually a pocket square. The word is Hindi for closed-neck. The silhouette comes out of nineteenth-century Jodhpuri court dress, which fused the British coat with the older angarkha.
Think of it as the Indian answer to a dinner jacket, more formal than a blazer and less ceremonial than a sherwani. It belongs in a room where the women are in heavy traditional wear and a Western lapel would feel out of place.
When does a suit win for a Chennai reception?
At the evening reception, when the bride is in a Kanjivaram or a lehenga, you want the clearest possible contrast with her. A deep navy or forest green suit, clean lapel, white shirt, gives the eye a second clear subject on the dais. That is the whole job of the groom's garment at a reception.
A half-lined wool suit in a Super 120s or 130s cloth takes dinner, dancing and five hundred handshakes in stride. Our longer piece on what a wedding suit should be made of in Chennai heat covers the cloth side. A good navy suit also lives beyond the wedding, into the anniversary dinner and the client black-tie evening. The bandhgala does fewer things, each one better.
When does a bandhgala win?
When the evening is Indian in register. A sangeet on a palace lawn. An engagement at a family home. A cocktail where the uncles are in bandhgalas and the women are in silks. A suit at an evening like that reads a step out of the room.
Vijay calls the bandhgala the hero garment of the Indian wedding wardrobe. It carries weight at a reception and sits comfortably at a family function the next afternoon. One cut covers two moments of the same wedding.
It also photographs beautifully next to a bride in heavy traditional wear. The closed collar echoes the collar on her blouse; the vertical line of the jacket agrees with the line of her pleats.
What should a reception bandhgala be made of?
In Chennai, linen. A good Belgian or Italian linen for a daytime function, with its honest crumple and a cool hand. Yarn-dyed linens sit from around ₹5,500 for trousers to around ₹27,000 for the bandhgala itself, before GST, as of October 2026.
For an evening engagement or sangeet, a wool-silk blend reads richer and holds its press longer, with a quiet sheen under warm lights.
Avoid thick polyester-viscose blends sold as suiting for weddings. They do not breathe, hold heat on your back, and do not photograph the way you expect.
Inside the jacket, half lining. The front panels are lined to hold the shape; the back is left open to the shirt. A patented method we have been using for years, and one reason men who have never worn a jacket in Chennai leave the trial saying they did not expect it to feel this light.
What colour works for the groom's reception?
Navy, deep green or burgundy for a suit at an evening reception. For a bandhgala the colour run is wider: cream for a daytime function, bottle green or dark wine for an evening, ivory or stone for an engagement where the bride is in red.
Black is the colour grooms ask for and we talk through carefully. Sharp under reception lights, hard to carry in an outdoor afternoon function in Chennai where the sun flattens the cloth. Midnight navy and charcoal give you most of what you want from black with none of the daytime problems. Our guide to suit colours for wheatish and darker Indian skin is the companion piece.
Can you wear a bandhgala for the muhurtham and a suit for the reception?
Yes, and this is the pattern the grooms who think about it the longest tend to land on. The bandhgala, usually cream or ivory, carries the ceremony. The suit, usually navy or deep green, carries the reception.
Two garments cover four or five functions when you plan it. The muhurtham bandhgala goes back on at a family lunch two days later. The reception suit does the engagement and every formal evening of the next five years.
How long before the wedding should you order?
Longer than you think. Made-to-measure suits at Derby Tailor Studio take two to three working days once the trial is signed off; a bespoke suit under Vijay Kapoor Bespoke takes ten to fourteen working days. Both depend on the workshop's load.
Where grooms get into trouble is before the stitch is set. Fabric sometimes has to come in from an overseas mill. The first trial exists so you can see your idea in your own cloth and adjust it. Vijay's line: a trial is a translation device, not a measurement check. That round-trip takes weeks of calendar time.
Come in at least six to eight weeks ahead; ten weeks is comfortable for both a reception suit and a muhurtham bandhgala. Our full piece on how early to order your suit walks through the timeline.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bandhgala the same as a Jodhpuri or a Nehru jacket?
Closely related. The Jodhpuri is the longer, formal version worn with matching trousers. The bandhgala today is the shorter, jacket-length cut you see at receptions. A Nehru jacket is the shortest, often worn as a layer with a kurta. Chennai still uses bandhgala and Jodhpuri close to interchangeably.
Can a bandhgala be worn to a non-Indian wedding reception?
It can, with care. A well-cut bandhgala in a sober colour reads as formal evening wear in an international room. It is also unusual there, so you are telling the room something about yourself. If you want to blend in, a navy or charcoal suit is quieter.
What does a wedding bandhgala cost in Chennai?
At Derby Tailor Studio, a linen bandhgala starts from around ₹27,000 before GST, as of October 2026. Yarn-dyed linens and silk-blend evening cloth run higher. Made-to-measure suits start at ₹18,000 plus GST, up to about ₹80,000 for the finest wool.
Do you need a waistcoat under a bandhgala?
No. The closed collar does the job a waistcoat does under a Western jacket. A pocket square and a lapel pin are the usual finishing pieces.
Can one bandhgala work for both the muhurtham and a cocktail evening?
With the right cloth, yes. An ivory linen or linen-silk bandhgala takes a morning function and an evening cocktail cleanly, with a change of pocket square and shoes. If the two events are back to back on the same weekend, two cuts of the same silhouette hold up better in photographs.
